Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT®)

The Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) is a standardized assessment—delivered in English—that helps business schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. Schools use the test as one predictor of academic performance in an MBA program or in other graduate management programs.

What the GMAT® Measures

The GMAT® exam measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that you have developed over a long period of time in your education and work. It does NOT measure:

  • your knowledge of business,
  • your job skills,
  • specific content in your undergraduate or first university course work,
  • your abilities in any other specific subject area, or
  • subjective qualities—such as motivation, creativity, and interpersonal skills
Format and Timing

The GMAT® exam consists of three main parts, the Analytical Writing Assessment, the Quantitative section, and the Verbal section.

Analytical Writing Assessment

The GMAT® exam begins with the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). The AWA consists of two separate writing tasks—Analysis of an Issue and Analysis of an Argument. You are allowed 30 minutes to complete each one.

Quantitative Section

Following an optional ten-minute break, you begin the Quantitative Section of the GMAT® exam. This section contains 37 multiple-choice questions of two question types—Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. You will be allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

Verbal Section

After a second optional ten-minute break, you begin the Verbal Section of the GMAT® exam. This section contains 41 multiple choice questions of three question types—Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. You are allowed a maximum of 75 minutes to complete the entire section.

The National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT)

The National Admissions Test for Law , or LNAT, is a test run by a consortium of UK universities (LNAT Consortium Ltd) in partnership with Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of Pearson Education. The test helps universities to make fairer choices among the many highly-qualified applicants who want to join their undergraduate law programmes.

The test is professionally written and calibrated by Edexcel for Pearson VUE.

The test's format and level are kept under review and its impact is closely monitored. LNAT Consortium Ltd is committed to widening participation in higher education and regards the LNAT as a possible aid to identifying untapped academic potential appropriate to degree-level legal education. Different participating universities may use the results of the LNAT in different ways and to different extents, but all regard the LNAT as just one element in a well-rounded admissions system. School-level qualifications, such as A-levels and their global equivalents, remain central to the selection process.

The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®)

First awarded in 1963, the CFA charter has become known as the gold standard of professional credentials within the global investment community. Around the world, employers and investors recognize the CFA designation as the definitive standard for measuring competence and integrity in the fields of portfolio management and investment analysis.

The CFA Program's self-study curriculum allows even the busiest investment professional to participate. The curriculum develops and reinforces a fundamental knowledge of investment principles. The three levels of examination verify a candidate's ability to apply these principles across all areas of the investment decision-making process. And the program's professional conduct requirements demand that both CFA candidates and charterholders adhere to the highest standards of ethical responsibility.

Drawing on a broad-based Body of Knowledge ™, the CFA Program is intended to supplement the education and work experience of investment professionals. Although the program is open to a wide range of investment specialists, the curriculum emphasizes the knowledge and skills needed to be involved in asset valuation or portfolio management.

The CFA Program is comprised of three levels, each culminating in an examination. You must pass each level sequentially, and fulfill other requirements of the program, before earning the right to use the CFA designation. In general, each level of the program requires a minimum of 250 hours of preparation, although time will vary from candidate to candidate based on familiarity with the material. The Level I examination is composed of multiple-choice questions, Level II is composed of item sets (multiple choice questions based on a common vignette), and Level III consists of essays and item sets.

Global acceptance of the CFA charter has led to tremendous growth in the program over the past decade. More than 100,000 investment professionals from more than 150 nations enrolled for the 2004 examinations.
